YOUR favorite Survivor Series/Starrcade Matches and Moments

Post by Mike » Fri Nov 20, 2015 8:14 pm

In the next seven days, will likely be watching a lot of Survivor Series and some Thanksgiving-era Starrcades, so wanted to see what everyone have a love for, both as great matches/moments as well as personal favorites too.

Shawn/Sid from SS '96 is a personal favorite. It was a party at my grandparent's house with my cousins and some school friends all sugar and caffeine'd up marking out as a bunch of 12-13 years for the whole show, but the main event was super fun to watch. Next day we all thought Jose Lothario was dead.

I'll post more throughout my rewatch, but wanted to get it started now. I'm sure Rich will come on and give his admiration for the elimination matches.

I think Hart/Austin from 96 actually is really good. I replayed Survivor Series 96 because B&V are doing their "This week in 1996" reviews and Hart/Austin was significantly better than Sid/Shawn. Shawn worked his ass off but that match doesn't really get good until Sid is on offense, whenever Sid had to sell, the match took a turn for the worse. Still a good match with some memorable moments, but I remember Austin/Hart far more fondly after this replay a couple weeks ago.

Even though I like the concept, the Survivor Series has never really lived up to my hopes and dreams of what it could be. Still, I'd say my favorite matches/moments were probably:

1) The Savage vs. Honky Tonk Man elimination match in 87
2) The Tag Team elimination matches in 87 and 89
3) The incredible Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior and Tito Santana promo at the 90 show.

Starrcade is a lot easier as the Magnum/Tully match is one of my all time favorite matches and is great on so many levels including the pre-match, the post-match and the real life aftermath of how intertwined their lives would forever become. I know the latter has nothing to do with the match, but it does cast an amazing resolution to this fictitious feud.

Interesting topic. Hadn't given this a ton of thought before. My top 3 for each aren't my picks for the best matches ever for those shows but are pretty much the ones I watched the most when I was a kid because we recorded all the PPVs we ordered and I wore out the tape on a few of these.

Survivor Series
1.) Team WWF vs. Team Alliance, 2001 [yes, the invasion angle sucked. this match did not]
2.) Powers of Pain and friends vs. Demolition and friends, 1988
3.) Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels, 1992

Starrcade
1.) Dean Malenko vs. Ultimo Dragon, 1996
2.) Eddie Guerrero vs. Shinjiro Otani, 1995
3.) Alex Wright vs. Koji Kanemoto, 1995

Survivor Series 95 opener is a super fun rewatch. Hot crowd, everyone busting their ass working hard. Some crazy spots. Womens match was good too.

Survivor Series '90 was fun.

80s Starrcades were great.

Watching Starrcade '96 - the first three matches are a blast with Malenko/Dragon opener, followed by Madusa/Akira Hokuto in a good match, and Rey/Liger tearing it up.

I have Starrcade 98 with Rey/Juvi/Kidman followed by Kidman/Eddie after, but I may end up watching the rest of this show.

Having rewatched the first Survivor Series this week, it is a remarkably good and consistent show. Of the early WWF ppvs, it's easily the best booked and wrestled shows. Definitely doesn't have any huge high peaks, but it's overall a great show.

So per Cagematch's rankings, which aren't 100% fool proof, these are the rankings of the first 29 Survivor Series. Last year is ranked as the worst, which may be true, but may also be because the ending left such a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

I put them on three tiers from the ones ranks 10-7, 6-5, 4-1.

1- WWE Survivor Series 2002 - New York City, New York- 9.26
2- WWF Survivor Series 2001 - Greensboro, North Carolina - 8.21
3- WWF Survivor Series 1996 - New York City, New York - 7.70
4- WWE Survivor Series 2011 - New York City, New York - 7.58
5- WWE Survivor Series 2003 - Dallas, Texas - 7.39
6- WWE Survivor Series 2009 - Washington, DC - 7.33
7- WWE Survivor Series 2007 - Miami, Florida - 7.28
8- WWF Survivor Series 1987 - Richfield, Ohio - 7.26
9- WWF Survivor Series 1995 - Landover, Maryland - 7.16
---
10- WWE Survivor Series 2012 - Indianapolis, Indiana - 6.97
11- WWE Survivor Series 2014 - St. Louis, Missouri - 6.87
12- WWE Survivor Series 2005 - Detroit, Michigan - 6.80
13- WWF Survivor Series 1998 "Deadly Game" - St. Louis, Missouri - 6.54
14- WWF Survivor Series 1992 - Richfield, Ohio - 5.98
15- WWF Survivor Series 1990 - Hartford, Connecticut - 5.95
16- WWE Survivor Series 2010 - Miami, Florida -5.88
17- WWE Survivor Series 2004 - Cleveland, Ohio - 5.86
18- WWF Survivor Series 1994 - San Antonio, Texas -5.85
19- WWF Survivor Series 2000 - Tampa, Florida - 5.81
20- WWF Survivor Series 1988 - Richfield, Ohio -5.77
21- WWE Survivor Series 2008 - Boston, Massachusetts -5.09
---
22- WWE Survivor Series 2006 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - 4.86
23- WWF Survivor Series 1993 - Boston, Massachusetts - 4.83
24- WWF Survivor Series 1991 "The Gravest Challenge" - Detroit, Michigan - 4.78
25- WWE Survivor Series 2013 - Boston, Massachusetts - 4.33
26- WWF Survivor Series 1997 - "Gang Rulz" - Montreal, Quebec, Canada - 4.12
27- WWF Survivor Series 1999 - Detroit, Michigan - 4.03

I recently watched 93 Survivor Series, The Doinks (Bushwackers and Men on a Mission) vs Bam Bam, Booger and the Headshrinkers is must see. One of the weirdest matches I've ever seen. Everyone on Bam Bam's team is more focused on eating bananas and turkey than the actual match and they get up from pins 3-4 times just to eat.

The segment w HBK and the host of Family Feud is horrible, but it is the lead in to Owen Harts heel turn which was good.

All the JCP Starrcade's were really good to great.

Survivor Series 87 is a lot of fun. Love the 20-man tag team bout.

One of the best start to finish WWF PPV's of the 80s. None of the matches are excellent by any means, but there are a ton of great moments within all the matches. The star power is just absurd as well.

The number of blade jobs on those JCP Starrcade shows is staggering. It was at least every other match in 85 alone.

I enjoy going back and watching old Survivor Series matches if only for the cast of characters, entrances and managers. They are so colorful and aesthetically pleasing.

The in-ring, more times than not, sucked. I've made my opinion on SS matches well known but the cheap finishes always killed it for me. A powerslam wouldn't work in any normal match but if there are more guys on the apron then it works. Also as the concept matured you started seeing far more DQs which were always the dumbest thing ever, guys getting DQ'd for no reason, guys just looking like idiots. In particular, Survivor Series 1990 (when they had the survivors main event) stands out as guys were doing just the lamest things to make sure they didn't survivor and go to the main event.

I still enjoy them and love watching them but the in-ring always bugs me, even for the era.
