Favorite/Best WrestleMania matches

Post by Mike » Mon Feb 29, 2016 1:36 pm

Every year around March 1, I get into a huge kick of rewatching WrestleManias - mainly V to X-Seven, but I want to dig into them all overall and see what would be my top ten.

From 1 to 31, what are your favorites? This is all encompassing. The best matches and your favorite matches, because sometimes favorite doesn't = best, but a match that means something special to you. I want to eventually over the next year put together my Top 100 list.

I came up with 17 matches that stuck with me:

British Bulldogs vs. Valentine, Beefcake (Mania 2)-Probably the only decent thing on the whole show and the peak moment (not match) for the Bulldogs, my favorite 80s tag team. Valentine and Beefcake were a very underrated team and these two teams had great chemistry whenever they faced each other.

Steamboat vs. Savage (WM III)-I've watched this match more than almost any other match during my 30+ years of fandom. It has lost some luster over the years, especially from the wretched George Steele involvement, but it really is the first classic Mania match.

Hogan vs. Savage (WM V)-This could have/should have main evented the second Wrestlemania, but they waited and got the great Mega Powers storyline out of it. This feud never got the blood feud ending it needed, so this is probably its peak.

Warrior vs. Hogan (WM VI)-The makers of Batman vs. Superman should watch this match to see how to do a good guy vs. good guy fight. Really felt like a clash of titans and the ending with the salute would have been a great end to the Hogan era.

Warrior vs. Savage (WM VII)-The ending is obviously amazing, but so is the match. Watching Savage getting destroyed and forced into retirement in the end was incredibly cathartic after witnessing him screwing Warrior at the Rumble.

Ramon vs. Michaels (WM X)-Like Savage/Steamboat, it's lost some luster over the years, but it was amazing at the time.

Brett vs. Austin (WM 13)-Probably the best match in Mania history not involving a murderer. Everything about this was great and Austin was made this night.

Austin vs. Michaels (WM 14)-The coronation of Austin and the end of Michaels as a wrestler for four+ years. I was at the Raw the next night in Albany and between those two nights, it seemed that tide had finally turned between WWF and WCW.

Tag Ladder Match (Mania 2000)-I like this match more than the TLC the following year. I'm a sucker for matches which elevate guys and this one sure as hell did that for all three teams

Rock vs. Hogan (WM X8)-Sometimes, you have to retreat to that little kid you were when you first discovered something, be it wrestling or otherwise. Watching Hogan 'come home' and get cheered over the Rock trumps any flaws this match may have had.

Evolution vs. Rock and Sock (WM 20)-I think Foley has said he thought this match sucked, but I disagree 100%. Just a super fun match with five top guys at various stages of their careers.

Benoit vs. Michaels vs. Triple H (WM 20)-In that moment, in that time, a tremendous moment. Most likely will never watch it again.

MITB (WM 21)-In the same way the Mania X ladder match innovated things, this took it to a whole other level. Probably the peak of Shelton Benjamin's career.

Flair vs. Michaels (WM 24)-If only this and the following night's Raw were the end for Flair. You had to know it wouldn't be...but one can dream.

Undertake vs Triple H (Mania 27)-For that moment where it looked like Hunter would break the streak with Taker's own move. The best match amongst the four Hunter/Michaels/Taker matches.

Bryan vs. Triple H (Mania 30)-Once he won, you knew he was going to win the main event. I don't care if it wasn't meant to be-it happened. That's all that matters.

Rollins vs. Reigns vs. Brock (Mania 31)-A great battle between Reigns and Lesnar. The best MITB cash in ever. Might have killed Reigns' career as 'the man.' Don't care, loved it.

Off the top of my head my list would go as follows.

Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin - Wrestlemania 13
My all time favorite match

Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker - Wrestlemania 25
The greatest match of all time in my opinion

Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart - Wrestlemania 10
The match is just to good and is one of the best openers in the shows history

Triple H vs. Daniel Bryan - Wrestlemania 30
Another opener and another fantastic match.

Shawn Michaels vs. Kurt Angle - Wrestlemania 21
Pure masterpiece

Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H vs. Chris Benoit
I didn't want to include this match but it's hard not to considering that this is arguably the best triple threat match of all time but it never gets mentioned and for obvious reasons.

Going over Dave's ratings for the first 10 Manias on Mookie's site, mixed with what matches I enjoyed and want to see again. I'll do XI-XXXI later on, but I've highlighted all the stuff I will plan to rewatch since it will be impossible for me to fully watch all 31 previous shows.

Moved to o/p.

It's somewhat foolhardy to argue about Dave's ratings some 30 years or so after the fact, but negative 4 stars for Andre/Hogan? It wasn't that bad a match, it was before, at the time, the biggest wrestling crowd ever and the intangibles are all there.

Rewatching much of what's available from Hogan's first reign on the Network, I've found him to be pretty consistently in the 2 1/2 to 3 star range in most of his singles' main events except against some of the more wretched challengers (Sika for example)

You have to remember Dave was much snarkier in those days. He's become much more of a straight laced wrestling "journalist" (as much as you can be). In the mid-80s though... not so much. This was in the era of the Junkfood Dog, etc. so a match rating like that is less a reflection of it being THAT bad of a match and more uber smark Dave rolling his eyes.

Context certainly matters. I didn't know much about Dave till the late 90s and didn't start reading the Observer until around 2007 so I completely lack that context.

Top 3 WM matches ever. IMO. C/P from my blog:

3. Bret Hart vs. Roddy Piper (WM VIII)

Yep, five stars, aaaall the way, baby. Perfection, this match is pure and crystal clear perfection, the story they told was incredibly captivating. Simple and effective, Roddy can’t hang with Bret in hold-for-hold department so he starts to brawl and gains a significant advantage, especially after busting Bret wide open. Excellent wrestling back-and-forth, the ref bump was well done and then the two moments that made this whole thing – Piper not hitting the Hitman with the bell, going for a clean win instead; Piper congratulating and hugging Bret after the match was over. One of the most underrated stories ever told, matches like this one remind you what pro-wrestling should be all about. *****

2. “Macho Man” Randy Savage vs. Ric Flair (WM VIII)

This shit gets better and better on every damn re-watch. Right now this is probably the best WM match ever, such a sumptuous epic filled with amazing and sky-high dramatic wrestling. The brawling parts were excellent and beautifully dynamic, Flair controlling the opening phase was some superb pacing, Macho Man’s comebacks were ridiculous and had the crowd going BONKERS for him, and so on and on… Then there’s Mr. Perfect, the biggest scumbag ever, with his constant interferences that only fired up the atmosphere each and every time. Flair bleeding was another story. Fucking hell, what a tremendous masterpiece, the finishing run was crazy exciting and then the finish itself with Savage rolling-up the Naitch for big victory while Miss Elizabeth was supporting him ringside was pretty much the icing on the cake after everything that happened, this match is the peak of WWF style of pro-wrestling storytelling. *****

1. Andre the Giant vs. Hulk Hogan (WM III)

Now, this is THE most underrated and underappreciated match of all time. And not just in WWF/E, mind you. Well, probably not with the casual audience, but rather with the Meltzer-influenced smarks and internet know-it-all thugs who mark out for cruiserweight jumpfests and reversal-heavy sprints. xD. Those of us who realize pro-wrestling is all about storytelling, we enjoy this match tremendously, and I honestly think this is the Top 3 Mania match ever, with the other two being Savage/Flair and whatever else.

This is arguably the greatest story ever told inside the North American squared circle, immovable object vs. irresistible force, the “525 pounds, 6 foot 5, 15 years undefeated, never being slammed” Andre against the reigning and defending Champion, the all-American superhero. And really, it translated into the match perfectly, this is basically a three act play: 1) Hogan tries to bodyslam Andre right away but fails, injures his back, Andre works over it, Hogan sells for him like a motherfucker, makes him look like a fucking BEAST; 2) Hogan makes a brief comeback before eating the big boot, Andre applies the bearhug (I love bearhugs and wrestlers who use them!) and there’s an incredible struggle in the middle of the ring, the crowd is BEGGING for a Hulk comeback, Hogan’s selling is all-time great at this moment; 3) Hogan, carried by the electrifying gigantic crowd, makes a proper comeback, and after the brief back-and-forth sequence he clotheslines Andre to finally bring him down, which draws MASSIVE cheers, then he BODYSLAMS Andre (been done dozens of times before, yeah, I know it lol) in the most iconic Mania moment ever, leg drop, 1-2-3 and it’s over, the Hulkster retains the strap. It’s as simple as it gets, and that’s the beauty of it, that’s the beauty of Andre’s matches with right opponents who know how to sell for him, who know how to work within his obvious physical limitations. Wrestling has always been the game of mind anyway, not the game of athleticism. Athleticism is nice, but it’s just a bonus to your brain.

I love this masterpiece and I will defend its honor until my last breath.

Hulk/Andre I always thought was perfectly fine because it told an incredible story, so much so that it filled a football stadium in anticipation for it. I hate the phrase "it is what it is", but I mean, Hulk Hogan vs. Andre is what it is - it's the monster giant trying to beat his former friend for the belt and the only guy who can beat this monster is Hulk Hogan.

Great write up.

I believe on the 50th Anniversary of WWE DVD/BR, they put the hard cam version of this match online, no commentary. It is outstanding. The crowd is molten for the whole thing.

Steve Austin vs Bret Hart
Chris Benoit vs Shawn Michaels vs Triple H
Chris Benoit vs Kurt Angle
Shawn Michaels vs Kurt Angle
Bret Hart vs Roddy Piper
Randy Savage vs Ric Flair
Owen Hart vs Bret Hart

My number 1 Mania match of all time also happens to be my favorite WWE match of all time. It's The Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels from WrestleMania 25. This match is one of the moments in my fandom that I'll never forget. Sitting on the couch with my brother, jumping up and down at near falls, legitimately fearing for Taker's life on that dive to the outside. I've never been more excited watching a wrestling match and I never get tired of watching this back.

I didn't have much Taker on my list, but it is kind of astounding that he went from the level of work he was showing in the first half, if not longer, of the streak and then ripped off a great run of matches from '07 through '13. Having better opponents certainly helped, but you have to give him credit for upping his game

Meltzer has since gone back and said that the Hogan/Andre match was closer to ** than -****. The Observer was more of an insider's club for smarks back then as opposed to the trade journal it would eventually morph into. If you go back and reread a lot of super old Observers from the 80's, dave swears off of WWF multiple times because the wrestling is so bad. Now, don't get me wrong, the wrestling WAS bad, the worst in the country (and maybe the world), but even dave will tell you today that he was a little too hard on them.

It has aged remarkably well. I wouldn't go ***** with it but it's a very good match from a storytelling perspective. It's a timeless affair you can turn on at any point, any time of the year and still get lost in. The weird three count deal at the beginning always irks me though but they recover pretty easily. I'll have to seek out that hard cam video, sounds great.

The three count is to plant the seed for Heenan to have something to complain about for the next year as the feud moved forward.

One match that never seems to get mentioned on best of Wrestlemania lists but that I personally love is the Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho match from WM19. I think that match has an almost perfect mix of simple wrestling storytelling ("anything you can do I can do better") with next-level athleticism. I guess people forget about it because it's from a non-hot period of WWE, but it's probably my personal #1. I'm also a sucker for the type of match where the younger guy takes the experienced veteran to the limit but can't quite put them away (see also Nakamura/Ibushi from WK9, Tanahashi/Okada from WK9, Zayn/Cesaro from whichever NXT Takeover special that is) so Michaels/Jericho is right up my alley.
