Season 2 Round 1 Thread: US Indies

Post by Robareid » Tue Jun 30, 2015 3:18 pm

Welcome to the first round of the second season of 'Well You Know Something, Brother?', now with 114% more wrestling nerds. Thanks for the guys sticking around for a second season, and welcome to the sixteen new guys. The category that's been chosen from the wheel of fortune for this round is *drumroll* US Indies.

I've taken this category to mean companies in the US since 2000 that at no point were on Cable TV in the US. While indies did exist before 2000, they have a somewhat different feel, so I stuck an arbitrary cut-off point. This does eliminate ROH, a company synonymous with the US indies for much of its existence, but as we just had a whole round dedicated to the company that's not too much of a problem. They did manage to sneak into the List Them though, all be it slightly tangentially.

This is the thread for discussion about this week's quiz, although I'd advise not giving away any hints as to the answers, at least until Friday. Questions will go up to everybody on Saturday.

Questions

Twenty Questions

1. The show that many see as the event which marked the beginning of the modern indy era is the King of Indies tournament from 2000. What company hosted said event?

2. While the most famous “Independent Wrestling Association” by quite a stretch was IWA: Mid-South, there was actually a handful of IWAs scattered across the country. What name does the former IWA: Texas now go under?

3. When EVOLVE was first introduced it was intended to be an overhaul in the way independent wrestling worked, with a far more sports based theme. What was the main event of EVOLVE 1?

4. Johnny Gargano is currently a major fixture on the independent scene across the US, but back when he was still working his way up one of his home promotions was the now defunct PRIME wrestling based out of Ohio. But what name did PRIME originally go under?

6. AAW based out of Chicago is one of the places to be for indy talent these days. Who is their current Heavyweight Champion?

7. Nigel McGuinness had his last match in APWA, who was it against?

8. PWG hosts an almost yearly tag team tournament known as the Dynamite Duumvirate Tag Team Title Tournament, despite occasionally not being for the titles, better known as DDT4. Which team has the most DDT4 tournament victories?

9. PWG was founded in 2003 by six pro wrestlers with three of them, Joey Ryan, Excalibur and Super Dragon, still being closely associated with the promotion. Name any one of the remaining three founders?

10. SHIMMER is widely regarded as the top Women’s’ promotion in the States, and titles their shows as Volumes. How many volumes are we up to now?

11. Family Wrestling Entertainment is still a relatively young promotion who run shows semi-regularly across the Tri-Borough area. Name any wrestler who appeared on their first show back in 2011.

16. What was the full name of the recently defunct Dragon Gate USA tag team championships?

17. While we’re on that topic, who was the inaugural singles champion for the aforementioned DGUSA?

18. CZW’s premier non-Death Match tournament is a yearly tournament called Best of the Best. Only one winner has gone onto sign a WWE contract as a wrestler, at least so far. Who is he?

19. Over its history CHIKARA have had a veritable myriad of large heel stables, mirroring the villainous groups that you so often see in comic books. One of the largest was the BDK, led by Claudio Castagnoli, now known as WWE’s Cesaro. What did the initials BDK stand for?

20. Adam Cole is one of current ROH’s top stars and a former ROH World Champion. Which company did he train with?

List Them

Write down 15 names (or titles, or whatever) and will receive a point for each correct name. The category will sometimes have exactly 15 possible correct answers, or sometimes slightly more, but you’ll always be submitting 15 answers, so this section will always be out of 15.

The Ted Petty Invitational between the years 2000 and 2008 (going under the name Sweet Science Sixteen originally) was a premier tournament for the US Indy scene. Over the years a practical who’s who has participated. Twenty one people have reached the final of a TPI, and six of them have been ROH World Champion. Taking away those six, that leaves fifteen TPI Finalists who haven’t been ROH World Champion. List Them.

Answers

Twenty Questions

1. The show that many see as the event which marked the beginning of the modern indy era is the King of Indies tournament from 2000. What company hosted said event?
All Pro Wrestling

2. While the most famous “Independent Wrestling Association” by quite a stretch was IWA: Mid-South, there was actually a handful of IWAs scattered across the country. What name does the former IWA: Texas now go under?
Anarchy Championship Wrestling

3. When EVOLVE was first introduced it was intended to be an overhaul in the way independent wrestling worked, with a far more sports based theme. What was the main event of EVOLVE 1?
Davey Richards vs. Kota Ibushi

4. Johnny Gargano is currently a major fixture on the independent scene across the US, but back when he was still working his way up one of his home promotions was the now defunct PRIME wrestling based out of Ohio. But what name did PRIME originally go under?
Pro Wrestling Ohio

5. Ricochet debuted for PWG at the 2010 Battle of Los Angeles. Who defeated him in the first round?
Claudio Castagnoli

6. AAW based out of Chicago is one of the places to be for indy talent these days. Who is their current Heavyweight Champion?
Lots of people knew Josh Alexander was a recent champion, and one or two thought it was vacant, but the actual answer is his partner Ethan Page

7. Nigel McGuinness had his last match in APWA, who was it against?
I was amazed anybody got this one, I'd never heard of TJ Phillips

8. PWG hosts an almost yearly tag team tournament known as the Dynamite Duumvirate Tag Team Title Tournament, despite occasionally not being for the titles, better known as DDT4. Which team has the most DDT4 tournament victories?
Young Bucks

9. PWG was founded in 2003 by six pro wrestlers with three of them, Joey Ryan, Excalibur and Super Dragon, still being closely associated with the promotion. Name any one of the remaining three founders?
Most people got Scott Lost, a few got Disco Machine but only Alan and Joe Gagne got Top Gun Talwar. Any of them got the point, but if there were style points those guys would have come out best.

10. SHIMMER is widely regarded as the top Women’s’ promotion in the States, and titles their shows as Volumes. How many volumes are we up to now?
Several people nailed this, and a few people were unluckily only one off.
75

11. Family Wrestling Entertainment is still a relatively young promotion who run shows semi-regularly across the Tri-Borough area. Name any wrestler who appeared on their first show back in 2011.
Reynolds/Azireal/Naboka/Marciano/Haas/Rockwell/Chow/Darling/Young/Santana/Law/Silver/Shields/Gaspard/Silva/Spyral/Static/Tag/Patriot/Draven. The only two of them which were actually answered were Charlie Haas and Shad Gaspard.

12. AIW has held the JT Lightning Invitational Tournament every year since 2012. Who was this year’s winner?
Raymond Rowe

13. Who defeated Low Ki in the finals of the 2005 incarnation of IWC’s Super Indy?
Again, I was very impressed a few of you got this. John McChesney

14. Which promotion hosted the event “When Hero Met Punk” which featured the famous 90 minute Iron Man match between the two eponymous wrestlers?
IWA:MS

15. Which US promotion had Monty Brown as their champion in 2005 and is one of the few companies to use Colt Cabana as a heel under his Officer persona?
Art of Wrestling listeners will know this one: Juggalo Championship Wrestling

16. What was the full name of the recently defunct Dragon Gate USA tag team championships?
Open the United Gate Championships, several people thought they were the Twin Gates, but that's Dragon Gate proper's tag straps.

17. While we’re on that topic, who was the inaugural singles champion for the aforementioned DGUSA?
BxB Hulk

18. CZW’s premier non-Death Match tournament is a yearly tournament called Best of the Best. Only one winner has gone onto sign a WWE contract as a wrestler, at least so far. Who is he?
Many thought Drake Younger, but it said as a wrestler (well, it did before all but one of you saw it) and Drake is contracted as a ref. The answer I was looking for was Sami Callihan/Soloman Crowe, but I made a mistake, as Egotistico Fantastico/Robert Anthony also had a WWE contract for a couple of years, working in FCW and DSW. I accepted either.

19. Over its history CHIKARA have had a veritable myriad of large heel stables, mirroring the villainous groups that you so often see in comic books. One of the largest was the BDK, led by Claudio Castagnoli, now known as WWE’s Cesaro. What did the initials BDK stand for?
Bruderschaft des Kreuzes. If you were at all close here I gave it to you, spelling didn't matter. However, I thought Blacktus' answer of Brudenkraft Deshultz Klan was just slightly too far away, although I applaud the effort.

20. Adam Cole is one of current ROH’s top stars and a former ROH World Champion. Which company did he train with?
CZW

The Real Hero "Problem"

Nah, he's not a problem. He's a lovely guy, and selfless too. I bet a lot of people don't quite appreciate the scale of the job him and Eric do to provide puro drops. But anyway, back on topic. The "problem" is that this guy is just too much of an encyclopedia of wrestling. He got full marks this week.

FULL MARKS! 35/35! ZERO WRONG!

I thought this weeks quiz was a hard one, and many of the scores back that up. It just seems Jahmale is on another level, so to level the playing field somewhat and to make the game more competitive we talked and came to the conclusion that a five point handicap on him would help balance the game somewhat. Now this still means he got 30/35 this week, still a monumental score, but slightly more mortal now.

Scoreboard

As you can see, I've colour coded the different leagues to make comparison between you and your leaguemates easier.

Congratulations to RealHero obviously, you got full marks you genius, but also to Joe for doing amazingly by any mortal standards (and thus drawing with Jahmale after his handicap), as well as Fray, Case, Cal and Dan for being the top scorers in their respective leagues.

Everybody from 24th down didn't submit an answers, it wasn't that they just got everything wrong.
